Michael Pugh’s magical story of his journey on horseback from Russia to Romania came out in July. Riding Through War and Peace takes the reader back to 2014, when it was still possible to travel that way through the Russian countryside, with its bucolic meadows and atmospheric battles sites and forgotten aristocratic estates, and into Belarus and then Ukraine, including a visit to the land of the Hutsul minority in the Carpathians. There’s humour, fascinating history and lots of great food along the way… This summer, Michael – who lived in Moscow and now teaches law at a London university – has been giving talks to present the book.
